On January 16, 2006, Mike was held hostage in his office for about 24 hours. He said that he had heard noises coming from his office and walked out to find Robert and Connie Bower pointing a weapon at the head of his secretary.
He had been Bower’s court-appointed lawyer almost a decade earlier, when he had advised him to plead guilty to the four other charges against him. At the time, Bower had told Hostilo that he was going to kill him when he got out of prison, and Mike thought it was an idle threat, but that day in 2006, it turned out that he did not know that was true.’
After being tied up and bound for just over 24 hours, he was able to speak with Mike and also discovered that Bower could obtain legal help from his college friend if he were to free Mike.
He eventually left the office to meet his college friend and began speaking with Mike, assisted by FBI agents surrounding them. Mike said he didn’t realize how intense the situation was until he left and saw his father break down in tears, at which point.
